Aldergrove Bowl

4330 Kingsway Abbotsford, BC

Key Sustainability Features The marsh pond (1.7 ha) created by Metro Vancouver is one of the largest wildlife habitat areas in the Lower Mainland Trails for: Walking/hiking (9.5 km), horseback riding (7 km), cycling (7.5 km) Located in the heart of the Fraser Valley, Aldergrove Bowl is a beautiful and inviting habitat for plants and wildlife as well as a recreation destination for residents. What makes this area a model for sustainable practices is that it is a former gravel pit where biosolids have been used to supplement inadequate top soil to facilitate plant growth and habitat creation. "The Aldergrove Bowl", as it is known, was turned into a natural setting and functional park space with the cooperation of the former gravel pit operators. It is unlikely that it would be as lush as it is today without the use of biosolids. Their use is one of the most notable features of the reclamation project. READ MORE

Delta Greenfields Project

,

The Greenfields project supports preservation and coexistence of wildlife habitat and agricultural productivity in the Fraser River Delta. This is one of BC’s most productive agricultural areas and is also home to thousands of immigrating waterfowl. The Greenfields project works with farmers to plant winter cover crops such as cereal grains, rye grass, and clover that benefit both soil productivity and wildlife habitat capacity within Delta. A Monitoring and Evaluation Program continues to evaluate cover crop types and waterfowl use. In addition, the project incorporates a communication program that assists in increasing awareness of agricultural-wildlife interactions. www.deltafarmland.ca   This post was imported from the 'Greater Vancouver Green Guide', it's part of the 'Green Guide Portal' to the Green Building Brain. Hastings Park Restoration

Hastings Park Vancouver, BC

One of Vancouver’s oldest parks, Hastings Park dates back to 1889 and encompasses 66 hectares (162 acres) in the Hastings - Sunrise neighborhood in East Vancouver. Through an intensive community initiative, a restoration plan was prepared for the greening of the site. The centre piece of the plan is the daylighting of Renfrew Creek and the creation of the Sanctuary around a bioremediation pond. The Sanctuary, the first phase of a multi-phase restoration plan, was designed to offer both riparian and upland habitat and a trail network to the public. The collection of rainwater, the separation of stormwater and sanitary sewer, and stormwater filtration are essential elements within the design of this neighborhood park. Tours: Regular nature walks are available through Vancouver Natural History Society and the Hastings Park Stewardship Group   This post was imported from the 'Greater Vancouver Green Guide', it's part of the 'Green Guide Portal' to the Green Building Brain. Strathcona and Cottonwood Community Gardens

601 Keefer St Vancouver, BC

Since 1987, Strathcona Community Gardens has been cultivating 2.83 hectares of urban land to provide food for local residents and to educate the public. As a purely volunteer-driven community-based initiative, the intention of the garden is to promote sustainability and urban agriculture while providing local residents with the means to grow fresh food and create habitat for wildlife. Due to overwhelming demand, the site was expanded in 1991 to include the Cottonwood gardens. These gardens transformed a former city dump site into a vibrant landscape that provides individual garden plots as well as on-site education resources. The Strathcona and Cottonwood gardens have received local recognition and awards as well as international acclaim. READ MORE
