Summary

Sustainability promotion and monitoring is a central focus of the GVRD. The Surrey Transfer Station was developed on successfully remediated brownfield industrial land. This facility was designed and constructed using the LEED© rating system and is one of the first such certified industrial buildings in Canada. It has LEED Silver certification. Water flow control fixtures reduce water use by 30%, and native, drought-resistant landscape design reduces the need for irrigation.

The use of natural light decreases electricity and heating requirements. High-recycled content construction materials were used wherever possible. Bicycle storage and change rooms are provided for staff, public transit is nearby, and the facility has an on-site charging station for electric vehicles.

Tours: Available upon request.
