Summary

The Institute for Computing, Information & Cognitive Systems (ICICS/CS) is one of the largest multidisciplinary research facilities at the University of British Columbia. Consistent with UBC’s sustainable building mandate, project goals were established to design a highly flexible facility that meets LEED© Silver standards.

Innovative mechanical strategies include the use of a high performance envelope, heat recovery chiller, and a chilled/heating slab system that results in a 52% reduction in energy consumption compared to MNECB standards. Furthermore, this system reduces greenhouse gas emissions by seventy five percent, and low-flow plumbing fixtures contribute to a 37% reduction in potable water usage.
